Home decor accessories are like jewelry on a beautiful dress. Accessories add shimmer, texture, and interest to a room. Make your home unique and interesting with antique accessories.
Antiquing for Home Decor Accessories
Why are accessories important in a room? Without the little touches of decor here and there a room is void of personality and lacking the individuality we wish for our homes. The wall color, flooring, and large furniture pieces create the anchor of the room. The accessories finish the room; giving the eye places to rest, linger, and enjoy.
One of my favorite places to find unique accessories is antique shops. Most shops have a variety of items from furniture to kitchen, books to clothing, and toys to sporting goods. The best part of antiquing is finding that diamond in the rough item.
Creativity and imagination while shopping is all that is needed to find a perfect piece for your room.
Antique and collectible shops are very popular and generally easy to find in most areas. I like to take a day and visit a few in my surrounding area. Another option is to visit antique and collectible shops while on vacation or take a weekend drive to a nearby town to find a treasure.
Antique and collectible shops can be overwhelming. The key is to take your time, look leisurely, and keep an open mind. Consider the shape, size, and details of an item rather than focusing on the paint color. Try to envision pieces transformed, upcycled, or repurposed.
What will that look like painted? Can I take it apart and use the pieces in an interesting way? What if I took that piece off and inserted something else? Can I change the purpose of that piece? Will it blend and add interest to my home or be a complete eye sore?
A recent trip yielded a beautiful, hand carved wood frame in need of a make over. I am looking forward to adding the frame to my gallery wall project (still in the works).
Antique Accessoires Shine
Travelling through an antique shop over the weekend unveiled these great accessories.
Mount the hats on a bedroom or hallway wall as a collection.
Antique and aged books are lovely on bookshelves, tables, and mantles. They add a sophistication and old-world vibe to a room.
I love these shoe forms. They are unexpected and unique items. They make a fabulous display. Using the odds rule – a display of three or five is perfect.
I also fell in love with these old, well-loved fishing reels. I think a number of reels piled in a basket or box makes an interesting display. They would also look terrific (3 or so) on a bookshelf, table, entry way, etc.
Throughout my home small antiques are incorporated with the modern. Antique tea cups are displayed in the kitchen with vintage silver, modern art, and stainless steel appliances.
The living room is home to modern and antique furniture with bits of antiques (grandfather’s camera, compass, and shells) mixed into the decor.
I hope you find time to visit an antique or collectible shop to find a perfect, unique home decor accessory.
