Favorite Holiday Traditions
Of course, Santa and Christmas Eve were part of our family tradition for many years. Our Christmas Eve, however, did not only include cookies and milk for Santa. Our Christmas Eve included reading the Christmas Story of Jesus, acknowledging the holiday for its true purpose, and a focus on the gift Christmas is to us.
A few of our favorite traditions include Christmas light displays, decorating the house, crafts, reading the Christmas Story, watching holiday movies, and recently Secret Santa. Every year I always purchase a special ornament for each child to add to the tree.
Holiday Light Parade
For the second year our family participated in the tractor light parade in our local town. It is so much fun to decorate the tractor, bring hot cocoa, snacks, and wear costumes.
Christmas light displays are an all-night event. We pile into the car, kids in pajamas with blankets, hot chocolate, popcorn, and a Christmas movie playing on the DVD player or Christmas music. We live in a rural area so our light display tour is always mapped out in nearby towns. Always a fun night and anticipated by the kids.
We always like making crafts for Christmas. This year I have a nice list of decorations and gift wrapping ideas. Of course, I may complete these crafts myself this year because the kids are much older now; but I am hopeful one of the kids will take part.
We always have an advent calendar. Our calendar is very different and unique. It doesn’t contain that nasty candy or tiny treats. Our calendar is a Lego-type winter display. Each day a box is opened, the Lego part is assembled, and added to the display.
Of course, there is always baking. Candy making, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and the like. I love this part of the tradition. It is a tasty experiment in different delights.
Finally, we always read the Christmas story. It is an opportunity to talk about the holiday, it is importance to our family, and our religious beliefs.
What are some of your holiday traditions? Do they change as your children get older?
