We all need a pick me up from time to time. Something that lifts the mood, puts a kick in your step, and boosts your confidence. Possibly the easiest and most inexpensive mood lifter is the perfect red lipstick.
It is not surprising many women are intimidated by red lipstick. We all want the classic look but fear wearing something too bright or garish. Fortunately, there are hundreds of different shades of red lipstick to select from making it almost impossible to not find the perfect shade for every skin tone. Every woman can find and rock the perfect red lipstick for their lifestyle.
Shopping for lipsticks recently I came across hundreds of different shades of red. It was possibly the most prolific of the lipstick colors available. The choices were astounding! Choices range from department to drugstore brands, color, and formula. I decided to focus on drugstore brands simply because it was the practical choice to show the variety of choices (I purchased the lipsticks myself, was not compensated in any way, nor represent any lipstick brands).
The differences between the high-end and low-end brands of lipstick include quality of ingredients, pigmentation, and performance. For the most part, if I am on the fence about a color I will always opt to try the budget-friendly version first.
How to Find Your Perfect Red Lipstick
Most women fall into two skin tone categories: olive or fair. Olive skin tones have a yellow or warm undertone. For these skin tones reds with a warm, orange undertone such as tomato red or warm plums work wonderfully. Darker skin tones look amazing with deep crimsons. Fair skin tones have a cooler or blue undertone. Pink, rose, or cooler reds are perfect for these ladies.

| TIP | Select a shade that is no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural lip color. This color will enhance your lips without feeling overpowering.

How to Apply Red Lipstick
Prepare your lips. Gently exfoliate and smooth your lips before applying lipstick. Use a damp washcloth or lip conditioner to gently remove loose or dead skin from your lips.
Apply foundation around the edge of the lips. Foundation will help keep the lipstick within the lip line and prevent bleeding.
Drop the brush. No need for a lip brush! Apply the lipstick straight from the tube. This method ensures more lip color is applied for the most pigmentation and longer wear.
Line it. There are different thoughts about lip liner. Some people love it; some hate it. Experiment with the different options to find the best method for your look.
Option 1: apply lip liner over the entire lip before lipstick – this will alter the lipstick color
Option 2: line the lips before applying lipstick – thought to keep the lipstick within the lip line and prevent bleeding
Option 3: apply liner around the lip after applying lipstick – helps clean up the edges and create a more defined lip line
Blot. Gently press tissue between the lips. Avoid rubbing the lips together because this thins lipstick coverage
