You know the feeling. You see a terrific scene perfect for a photo. The camera settings are dialed in and you click the shutter. With anticipating you look at the image on the display. Only to find disappointment. To your eye, the photo is not as amazing on the camera as reality.
One of the best skills I have used to transform photos from ok to stunning is Adobe Lightroom. It has taken time to learn the basic of photo editing. It has been worth the time spent learning how to transform my photos.
Learning the Basics
Of course, the first place to start is learning to use your camera. Without understanding the fundamentals of your camera, it becomes difficult to take ok photos. The basics of photography consist of understanding aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. Aperture settings determine the depth of field. Basically a blurry background or everything in sharp focus. ISO is the light that enters the shutter. Each environment determines the ideal ISO (outside at the beach vs. indoors). Finally shutter speed is how long the shutter stays open to capture motion.
As you continue practicing with your camera you want to learn more and more. For me, as I view amazing images it inspires me to learn more about photography.
Photo Editing Software & Lightroom Presets
It does not take long for you to want to learn photo editing skills to improve your photography. Filters on Instagram and our mobile devices have introduced the idea of presets to photo editing. Why not take advantage of the technology at home?
I love Adobe Lightroom. A digital photography course I attended recommended Lightroom. I have found it easy to use and not overwhelming. Others might recommend Adobe Photoshop. For me, Photoshop is more advanced and intimidating but well worth checking out.
Each software allows you to enhance the light, tone, saturation, and style of a photo. At first, I was timid making changes to my images. Today, I am bold as I have acquired confidence using the software. I have learned the edits can enhance a photo beyond ok to stunning.
| TIP | Take all images in RAW for editing.
| TIP | Use ‘Save As’ with a different name. Keep the original photo for future edits.
The Fun Stuff
Now for the fun stuff. Editing in Lightroom can be so much fun if you are willing to experiment. My new favorite addition to my Lightroom kit are these terrific Presets. Lightroom has a terrific feature that allows you to save settings as presets to apply to future images. This kit quickly installed in my Lightroom and it has transformed my images.

The presets also save you time. One click and the settings are quickly applied to the image. Save as and you are done (perhaps after a little cropping).
