Don’t you love the master bedroom retreat photos on Pinterest? I have a whole board devoted to my fantasy master bedroom. Unfortunately, my reality does not match my Pinterest board. Follow me on Pinterest to watch the master bedroom makeover on a budget transformation.
Master Bedroom Makeover on a Budget
My current bedroom is very large; the result of transforming an older home’s garage into a master suite. Based on past and current master bedroom standards I have nothing to complain about. I have a full bath with jet tub, massive closet, and lots of square footage (I think the room is 20′ x 15′).
Fortunately, only the finishes need attention and they are easy to change. This is a perfect opportunity for the DIY’er in me to change things up!
The Flooring
My husband and I have committed to tearing out every last bit of carpeting in our house. After FOUR children, two dogs, and two cats the carpet has seen it’s best days.
We have chosen a beautiful distressed dark hickory laminate to replace the carpet. We are confident the laminate will hold up just fine.
The Plan
I am starting with Pinterest, of course! I started a board called “Master Bedroom Retreat”. Here I pinned bedrooms, colors, furniture, accessories, anything that caught my eye and I would love in a master suite.
I noticed the same color scheme, furniture style, and bedding repeated in my pins. An easy way to decide my style!
Step One – Take stock
Great bed
Two side tables – one bamboo / rattan in a dark color; the other a walnut modern style
Antique dresser with mirror
Ugly 1980’s dresser, long and low. Refinished in a dark walnut (yum)!
Walnut / cane antique chair
Antique hope chest
Step 2 – What does the Bedroom Need
Lighting — 3 amazing lamps; for the night tables and on the long low dresser
Hardware for dresser — Purchase pulls and knobs for the long-low dresser.
Area Rug — something large enough to go under and around the bed. Neutral in color, but fabulous to walk on
Seating – DIY time! Make a padded cushion for the hope chest in a complimentary fabric. Make cushions for the antique walnut chair. Perhaps something with a stripe and the other with a texture or complimentary print?
Art Work – A frame for the architectural drawing above the bed. More art using my photographs above the long-low dresser?
Accessories — The room needs character and the best way to add personality is with accessories. Books, art pieces, vases, etc.
Draperies – New draperies in the same color palette. I will probably make these to save on cost.
Step 3 — Get Started
Here is a small picture of the new bedding I found on clearance at a large retailer. The color scheme is perfect for the style. It looks like the bedrooms on Pinterest! P.S. This is NOT my bed but the image on the bedding bag.
Tomorrow I will scout Salvation Army and Goodwill stores for lamps, decorations, and picture frames I can paint.
I’ll show you what I find and how I plan to transform it into the perfect pieces!
Cheers!
