The name Swarovski is well known and respected. It is the name of quality, innovation, and sparkle. Swarovski crystals and gemstones are renowned for their beauty. So valued, in fact, Hollywood actresses wear gowns encrusted in dazzling Swarovski crystals.
The Swarovski began in 1865 when Daniel Swarovski invented a machine to cut crystals. His goal was to make crystals more accessible to a wider-audience. The company was founded by the Bohemian jeweller in the town of Wattens, Austria. From one man’s innovation was born a dazzling industry that continues to delight.
Starting in 1965, Swarovski began cutting gemstones.Having successfully introduced cyrstals to the consumer market, Swarovski moved into machine cutting gemstones. The company began precision cutting sapphires, amethyst, peridot, and citrine. Over the next few decades, the company began precision cutting a wide variety of stones like pyrite, marcasite, and zirconia.
Using a specific technique, called Xilion cut, the brilliance of crystals is amplified and intensified. This technique was introduced to the market in 2004.
During the next two decades, Swarovski crystals appeared in light fixtures and crystal figurines. The company continued to add gemstones to its precision cut business to include pyrite, marcasite, and zirconia.
It also began cutting topaz to reveal the stones wide range of colors and luminance. This process results in spectacular gemstones.
Continuing on the path of innovation:
- Watches were designed featuring Swarovski crystals with Swiss Watch
- Emerging designers such as Alexander McQueen are supported
- New crystal shapes and cuts are constantly created and introduced
In fact, the company designed and developed the Diamond Leaf crystal shape specifically for Giorgio Armani through their 2007 collaboration.
I love to use Swarovski crystals in my jewelry designs. The quality of the sparkle, variety of shapes, and clarity are fantastic in jewelry. Often, when a gemstone is too expensive for a project, crystals are a fabulous way to incorporate shine and sparkle. The crystals add depth to a design, at a reasonable price, without sacrificing the quality of the design. Swarovski also creates crystal pearls that are in a stunning array of colors. Similarly to the crystals, the pearls offer a reasonable and wide variety of options to the natural pearl.
The company continues to celebrate a long history of quality design. In 2014, the company partnered with Atelier to design a collection of fine jewelry. The stunning pieces are created with semi-precious and precious Swarovski gemstones in gold.
